For his first exhibition at Galleria Raffaella Cortese, Milan, Francesco Arena has realized three new projects conceived for the gallery three exhibition spaces, whose street numbers give the exhibition its title: sette, uno, quattro (seven, one, four). The space at number 1 in via Stradella contains three sculptures in polished bronze – self-portraits in which the artist emphasizes the length of his beard after 57, 110 and 210 days of growth. 57 are the days between the massacres of Capaci and Via D’Amelio; 110 days is the duration of the last stay of Nietzsche in Turin; 210 are the days of the First Gulf War. The space at no. 4 is divided into two separate rooms, each hosting a granite slab, set at a height of 2 m and 30 cm, with an inscription from Susan Sontag. Finally, at n. 7 is an installation composed of DAS handmade sculptures, representing the 71 corners and 80 edges of his house in Puglia. Each corner or edge is formed by three segments; the sum of the length of these segments, multiplied by the number of corners and edges, is 91 meters, which are equivalent to the sum of the heights of the two Bamiyan Buddhas destroyed by the Talibans in 2001. The use of DAS, a material that is modeled with hands and doesn’t need to be cooked, is a reference to the ruins of the Afghan sculptures, built and destroyed by men.
