GIOVANNI COPELLI
A Cavallo
(Monumenti Equestri e Altre Pitture)
Press Release
The exhibition presents a series of unreleased paintings instilled with images from the Italian 15th and 16th centuries. Copelli specially conceived the artworks through an intimate journey of rediscovery of the ancient.
The pictorial path represents the artist’s attempt to reintroduce the Renaissance cult of the classical world in a contemporary key. By reconfiguring these motifs into completely new forms in the present time, the artist verifies the old, driven by the need to fill gaps or respond to the unexplained needs of the present.
The references to classicism and their early modern reworking offer a set of suggestions and iconic elements, as happens with the two equestrian monuments which propel the exhibition. Remaining faithful to the continuous mixture of past and present, Giovanni Copelli investigates his historical identity and the pictorial tradition through a path of cultural and artistic rediscovery.
