Take Me (I’m Yours) is part of the annual exhibition cycle L ORO, designed as a laboratory for the artists and researchers in residence at the French Academy in Rome. A meeting place where numerous disciplines and miscellaneous experiences converge, and which take shape within the framework of Villa Medici.
Take Me (I’m Yours) creates an interactive space for visitors and artists which has a distinctive open form with constant evolution: a space within which the public is allowed to adopt behaviours generally forbidden in museums – like touching, testing, tasting, interacting with the exhibited work – thus playing a role in their dissemination, transformation and rebirth.
Take me (I’m Yours) is also an exhibition based on communication and memory, because the projects are set up in the morning and disappear by the evening, in constant evolution up until the moment when the rooms become empty, the works dispersed around the city, and the visitor who enters Villa Medici is confronted with an exhibition that he has to imagine.
Take me (I’m Yours) is dedicated to the Belgian artist Jef Geys, who recently passed away, and represents a revolutionary conceptual art, which was the basis of the first version of the exhibition. Conceived in 1995 by Christian Boltanski and Hans Ulrich Obrist for the Serpentine Gallery in London, Take Me (I’m Yours) has seen – thanks to its re-interpretation in 2015 in Paris by Chiara Parisi – several re-orchestrations, enriching and developing itself with each new showing, and bringing together a growing number of artists, each time invited to challenge the format.
Twenty years after its creation in London, the first reinterpretation took place at La Monnaie in Paris, generating such enthusiasm that it was then shown at the Kunsthalle Charlottenberg in Copenhagen and at the Jewish Museum in New York in 2016. The following year, in 2017, Take Me (I’m Yours) was part of the Bienalsur, the South American contemporary art biennale, then was shown at the HangarBiocca in Milan. After this version organised by Villa Medici, the exhibition Take Me (I’m Yours) will be declared “decommissioned” by the curators themselves, thus leaving it free to be recreated elsewhere.

The French Academy in Rome is a place of production and experimentation which each year welcomes artists and researchers of various nationalities, generations and disciplines, offering them the opportunity to devote themselves fully to their research. The exhibition thus includes the projects from the residents Giulia Andreani, Juan Arroyo, Eric Baudelaire, Boris Bergmann, Lise Charles & Aurélien Dumont, David Douard, Maxime Guitton together with the well-known musician and composer Alvin Curran, Cyril Gerbron, Claire Lavabre, Marc Leschelier, Roque Rivas, Moussa Sarr, Stéphanie Solinas, Odysseas Yannikouris together with Alessandra Monarca.

The exhibition at Villa Medici is put together like a worksite, following the Renaissance tradition where all the disciplines were mixed together in the construction of the same project. A real urban industry in which artists, architects, designers, musicians and writers participate and work together for many days. By placing the visitor at the heart of the project, Take Me (I’m Yours) transforms itself every day and allows the public to undergo a unique encounter with art, in several forms. The exhibition removes the physical and moral boundaries which generally separate visitors from art works, by inviting them to hold them and to take them away with them, so that they can perform again, giving them new life. More than anything else, this exhibition invites us to take the time for an encounter and to share a memory.
On the one hand, the public can enjoy this unusual freedom to take possession of the exhibition’s works, and on the other hand, the artists can reclaim the historic spaces of Villa Medici: the antique Galeries des Chevaux, the Citerne romaine, the Balthus studio, the garden in front of the famous façade of the Villa, and to have the exclusive experience of discovering the remains of the ancient home of Honorius, by passing through the now secret and underground spaces inhabited before the arrival of the Medici.
The exhibition also expresses itself through the special project the Speakers Corner, where speech is given to Rome. Speakers Corner allows the freedom for anyone to express themselves on a subject of their choice and at any time.
For her first exhibition in France, Wu Tsang has transformed Lafayette Anticipations into a hybrid space that summons the worlds of the night and the sacred. Through this metamorphosis, the visitor is immersed in a mysterious atmosphere where recent and earlier works by the American artist are brought together.
