The perfect self-portrait in the age of self(ie)-portrait
The selfie, intended as the best way to depict yourself today, is within everyone’s reach. The history of Western art has a long tradition of self-portraits extending into the sphere of everyday life creating a bridge between what you are and how you wish to appear. Relying on this principle, through the digital device, anyone can not only be an artist but also play with the more self-representative image at any given moment.
The selfie as a mirror does not escape the concept of authorship, instead it democratically amplifies a new aesthetic practice based on the self-governance of our own public image. The selfie also references that specific moment of fame everyone, according to Andy Warhol, would be exposed to sooner or later.
The digital self-portrait, by its very nature quick and immediately connected, refers to the concept of DIY fame that puts the spotlight on everyone’s lives at a given time. Self-promotion, reflected identity, or simply self-assertion.

The Menabrea Art Prize was founded in 2011 by Untitled Association and Birra Menabrea. The annual award aims to promote emerging Italian artists working with a variety of media – from video to sculpture, and from graphic design to collage – and who are not yet represented by art galleries.
The contest aims to explore a variety of artistic studies and approaches, thus representing a true challenge for all of the participating artists.
For the first four editions, the five finalists and the theme of Menabrea Art Prize had been selected by CURA., media partner of Untitled Association initiatives.
