Puppies Puppies (Jade Guanaro Kuriki-Olivo)

Cover Story

“To live as a trans woman in this society is an act of protest.”

The bed will be one of the main focal points of Puppies Puppies’ upcoming exhibition at the New Museum. The artist is working with curator Vivian Crockett to recreate her bedroom in the glass-encased lobby gallery. Jade’s day-to-day experiences and activities will then be on display during the museum’s opening hours, making her life available for viewing either in person or online. “My work has always been so parallel to my life experiences. The people I love are always collaborators.”

“I’ve found my chosen family like House of Transcendence and my sisters Lexii Foxx and Alethia Rael. I’ve recently started falling in love again after not feeling that specific feeling in so long. The programming for this exhibition will showcase this love of chosen family. This exhibition will showcase a love I wish I had seen or known about growing up as a trans girl… not yet made known to the world.” The cover photo was taken by Myles Loftin. The scene is a performance staged by the artist. The photograph looks familiar because it’s a recreation of a recreation. The performance and corresponding film were originally created by conceptual artist Yoko Ono and musician John Lennon. Later on, Jhené Aiko and Donald Glover pose for a photo capturing the same scenario. Puppies Puppies has always shown an interest in artistic simulacrum. In the cover photo we see Jade laying happily with her love in her green bedroom under a sign that reads “Bed Peace”.
