SHE DEVIL began in 2006 based on an idea of Stefania Miscetti’s, and brings together both Italian and international artists and curators, from the emerging to the established. A variety of work and critical perspectives coexist within this truly polyphonic conversation, which reveals a multiplicity of female worlds and points of view. SHE DEVIL is the name of a heroine from the Marvel Comics universe, as well as the title of Susan Seidelman’s famous 1989 film. The name makes a playful allusion to the diabolical and bizarre spirit with which artistic experience engages with everyday life. The purpose of the project is to stir the collective consciousness – with humour by moments, realism at others – on subjects such as female identity, the body as a site of representation and meaning, and how personal experiences can take on universal dimensions, even when the artists’ private world(s) are at the forefront of their work. While staying true to the original concept behind the exhibition, the two editions featured here broaden its scope, with the curatorial team selecting works by artists that reflect on subjects related to gender fluidity and patriarchy.
